Weather Reports for Bilbao Spain: Mild and moderate

Weather reports for Bilbao Spain are clear: the climate here is mild and moderate. Yes, you can enjoy lots of sunshine in summer, but it’s not as hot as at the popular Spanish east coast. And while it never gets too cold either, the Bilbao weather seems like it was made for city trips and weekend breaks.

Bilbao has a marine climate. All year round we have mild temperatures thanks to westerly winds.

A sunny day at Mount Artxanda, Bilbao

This was a sunny day in April 2006. We decided to go up the Mount Artxanda for a pick-nick. The girls are reading the local newspaper "El Correo".

July and August are the hottest months with average temperatures of 21°C. December and January are the coldest with 9 and 8°C. The average annual temperature is 14ºC.

If you come here in summer you should always be prepared for some rain – the westerly winds also make it pretty humid here. Don’t worry though, the sun may shine again in only a few minutes!

There’s a light drizzle here called the sirimin which you are likely to meet on your trip.

The wettest periods of the year, according to annual weather reports for Bilbao Spain, are April-May and October-December.

Luckily it never gets depressingly cold or dark, at least not for a long time.

Snow is rare in Bilbao, which is quite special if you – like me – come from Sweden. We do see a snowflake occasionally, but if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, you’re definitely at the wrong address.

Still the Bilbainos know how to enjoy the winter. In fact, it’s one of my favourite seasons.
