San Sebastian Spain – a travel diary of our weekend visit

Me in San Sebastian Spain

San Sebastian Spain, or Donostia as it is also called, is just such a beautiful place, located not far from Bilbao.

My husband and I recently decided to go for a weekend visit and we had a great time.

Let me share with you our San Sebastian Spain experience:

“We caught the bus from the Bilbao bus station, Termibus. In little more than one hour we were there. During the bus ride we enjoyed the lustrous landscape passing by, green, verdant hills, grassing cows and sheep defying the steep Basque hills.

We arrived at noon time and the sun was shining from a clear blue sky. It was February and the thermometer showed 20 degrees Celsius. Wow, we had packed the umbrellas but forgotten the sunglasses. The sun was so strong I had to close my eyes for this photo.

Checking in at the hotel - we got a room with an ocean view

A room with a view We checked into “Hotel Londres y de Inglaterra”, a four star hotel with a noble history (I booked the room over the net and got a really good price).

I leaned out of the window and saw a beautiful view – the ocean.

It happens that the city centre of San Sebastian Spain is located at the beach! These are the shores of the Bay of Biscay and there were people sunbathing and kids playing soccer on the sand. The name of the beach is “La Concha” (the shell) because of its shape.

San Sebastian Spain is known to be one of the most beautiful cities of the Basque Country. The rolling sea, blue sky and fine sand are ever present. I had the camera handy during our entire stay. Click here to have a look at some of the best photos..

We enjoyed the magic experience of strolling along the beach promenade watching people and the waves passing by.

Enjoying the Spa “La Perla”

Rolling waves at la Concha beach First thing on the program was a visit to “La Perla”, a famous spa located right on the beach. I had heard about this place but this was my fist visit.

This place offers a long list of different treatments and it is really hard to choose just one. Finally we settled for an “exfoliating massage with warm volcanic stones”. What a treat!
After 45 minutes of super treatment I felt like new.

Scrubbed and tubbed and wrapped up in white cotton gowns we were led to the spa area. Here we were up for our next pleasant surprise; salt water therapy in all its possible forms.

We enjoyed the Jacuzzi with a sea view, the dry sauna, the steam sauna, the relax pool, the fitness pool and we even dared to enter into the ICE room, that's right ice cubes.

This was great fun and perfect relax but quite costly. For 1 hour and 45 minutes in the pool area we paid 19 euros. The individual treatment cost 46 euros per person.

Eating out – which restaurant do we choose?

La Rampa restaurant Dining out was also high on our to-do-list in San Sebastian Spain. Food in the Basque region is known for its high quality. Strolling down to the Old Town and the harbour area we found a plenitude of cosy little restaurants to choose from.

At the hotel we were recommended a place called “La Rampa” located at the end of the “Paseo de Muelle” in the harbour.

This restaurant is specialised in seafood in all its forms. The first night we decided to have supper there and had a very positive experience.

Museums in San Sebastian

Me and Einstein Our second day in San Sebastian we woke up with dark clouds and rain. After all, this is the Basque Country and the weather changes from one moment to the next.

This was a perfect time for visiting a couple of museums. The first stop was the “San Telmo”, an old convent turned into museum. Here we learned a lot about Basque history and art. One of the highlight was entering into a Basque farm house just the way it was two hundred years ago.

Later in the afternoon we switched to modern science – we caught a taxi to the “Kutxa Espacio”. At the door we were greeted by Albert Einstein and a moving robot.

Saying goodbye to San Sebastian!

The weekend passed really fast. The good thing is that we live in Bilbao and can come back for a visit soon.

To rest our tired feet before catching the bus back home we sat down at bar and has some pintxos.

We really had a fun weekend in San Sebastian Spain.
