Where do we eat today? I'll take you to my favorite Restaurants in Bilbao
Getting hungry? Looking for some good restaurants in Bilbao? Believe me; you’ve come to the right place!
Food in the Basque Country
is a source of pride and joy. This is a place of gastronomic societies and internationally renowned top chefs. There are also zillions of small neighborhood restaurants in Bilbao.
Some really good restaurants in Bilbao
Here is my very own, personal list of restaurants that I have been to and that I recommend. Remember, I am not a food journalist. I am just this average person that loves to eat good food in a pleasant environment, and if the price is decent, even better.
Victor Montes Plaza Nueva 8, Casco Viejo, Bilbao, 94-415 70 67
This place is one of my favorite restaurants in Bilbao. The decoration is just so neat and old fashioned. If you are not too hungry I recommend you to try out some of the pintxos in the bar (these are small, bite sized sandwiches all super delicious). If you yearn for something more filling you can sit down in the restaurant for some
traditional Basque food.
Victor Montes take pride in an extensive wine list. If the weather is good you can enjoy your meal at the outdoor terrace facing the Plaza Nueva in the
old town.
Hotel Barceló Nervión Campo de Volantin 11, (located close to the Town Hall)Okay, this is a hotel restaurant and the environment might not be so cosy - but the lunch menu is such a treat! Here you get traditional Basque food with a trendy touch. Make sure to choose the 20 Euro menu and not the 10 if you want a feast. This is what I had last time: Pumpkin soup, dear stew with mashed potatoes, cheese and dessert. Mineral water, wine and bread are included in the price. As a bonus you can eat in a smoke free environment (and that’s quite unique).
Restaurante Víctor Plaza Nueva 2, Casco Viejo, Bilbao. 94 – 424 41 67
I eat lunch here every now and then. The restaurant is beautifully located at the Plaza Nueva. Besides the bar there are six small tables covered with green and white chequered table cloths. This place has a Parisian feeling to it. If you choose today’s lunch menu you might get red bean stew, oven baked chicken and apple pie. All for the price of 8:60 Euros. This is home made, rustic and down to earth food.
Tapelia c/Uribitarte 24, Bilbao, 94-423 08 20. (located close to the Zubi-Zuri bridge)Do you feel like trying some more traditional Spanish food? Tapelia offers a variety of paellas, fish dishes, salads and crepes. A good choice if you want a meal with a Mediterranean flavor.
Restaurante Buda d’Jade c/ Ayala 1, Bilbao (located behind "El Corte Ingelés")
When I feel like Asian food this is my first choice. This restaurant serves a blend of Japanese, Chinese and Thai food. The decoration is sober and the service good. During weekdays you get a complete lunch menu for 10 Euros. My favorites are: Miso soup, pincho satay (that’s chicken skewers with peanut sauce) and the roasted duck. It’s best to book table in advance if you plan to come at lunch time.
Good to know if you are eating out in Bilbao
One of the things you need to know is that in between 2 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon the streets are deserted and the stores are closed. People are eating! And they are enjoying a great cuisine. No “fast food” here. Many work places close for 2 or 3 hours in the middle of the day and so many people go home to have lunch. Often the whole family gathers to have a three course meal - everyday of the week. Others are eating out, in a restaurant. Here everybody seems to be a master chef (besides me, that would be, but I am Swedish so I am excused). Bilbainos take great pride in their cooking. The prime ingredients are excellent. Fresh fish straight from the
Bay of Biscay
, meats, game, fruits, vegetables, cheeses. Whenever you have time remember to pay a visit to the
food market.
As I eat my way through restaurants in Bilbao I promise to keep you updated on my culinary discoveries.
